IRS Expands Online Self-Service Access for Partnerships, Tax-Exempt Organizations, and Government Entities

The IRS has broadened access to its Business Tax Account online self-service platform to include partnerships, tax-exempt organizations, and federal, state, local, and Indian tribal governments.

This secure platform allows eligible entities to access key account information online and manage their federal tax responsibilities more efficiently.

What the Business Tax Account Platform Provides

Authorized users and designated officials can:

  • Make federal tax payments
  • View balances and payment history
  • Download select IRS digital notices
  • Access eligible tax transcripts
  • Request a task compliance check
  • Review and confirm business information on file with the IRS

Who Can Serve as a Designated Official

Organizations must have at least one designated official to manage and authorize user access. Designated officials can:

  • Act on behalf of the entity
  • View full account details
  • Add, remove, or manage designated users
  • Add or manage additional designated officials

An account can have more than one designated official, though eligibility requirements vary by entity type.

  • Partnerships:
    • General partner 
    • Managing partner of the LLC 
  • Tax-exempt organizations:
    • Officer of the organization (president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, CEO, CFO, or COO)
    • Board chair
    • Trustee of a trust
  • Government entities:
    • Elected official
    • Director of taxation
    • Appointed official
  • Indian Tribal governments:
    • President, vice president, treasurer, or secretary
    • CEO, CFO, or COO 
    • Tribal leader
    • Chair
    • Governor
