IRS Launches New Mobile App for Accessing Tax Account Information

Oct 1, 2026

The IRS has launched a new mobile app that gives individual taxpayers access to selected account information and services directly from their phones. The app replaces IRS2Go and expands mobile access to features such as tax records, payment information, certain IRS notices, and Identity Protection PINs (IP PINs).

For taxpayers, that could mean faster access to information when preparing a return, responding to an IRS notice, making a payment, or gathering documents requested by a tax advisor.

What Changed?

Launched September 25, 2026, the new IRS app replaces IRS2Go, which mainly let users check refund status, make certain payments, and find tax-filing resources.

The new app builds on those features by allowing taxpayers to securely sign in and access selected services from their IRS Individual Online Account. Current IRS2Go users do not need to download a separate app. Those with automatic updates enabled should receive the new version through the normal update process, while other users can update or download the app through the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Individuals can still use some features without signing in, including checking refund status, making certain payments, and locating free tax assistance.

What Can You Do With the New IRS App?

After signing in, users can access a broader range of account-specific information and services from their mobile devices. Current features include:

  • Checking refund and amended-return status
  • Viewing available account balances
  • Making payments and reviewing payment activity
  • Viewing select IRS notices and letters
  • Accessing available tax records and transcripts
  • Managing certain profile and communication preferences
  • Accessing an IP PIN

The IRS plans to add more capabilities over time. For now, taxpayers should keep in mind that the app provides access to selected Individual Online Account services rather than every feature available through IRS.gov.

How Could the App Make Tax Matters Easier?

The app gives individuals another way to access information they may need when preparing a return or addressing an IRS matter.

For example, users may be able to confirm estimated tax payments, retrieve available transcripts, access an IP PIN, or review certain IRS notices before providing information to their tax advisor. That could make it easier to gather documents and address questions without searching through paper records or separately accessing the IRS website.

It is still important to monitor physical mail because not every IRS notice is available electronically. If a notice involves a balance due, changes to a filed return, or a request for additional information, consider discussing it with your tax advisor before responding.

The app may also make it easier to gather the information needed to complete a return or address an IRS issue.

What Doesn’t the New IRS App Replace?

The app makes certain tax information easier to access, but it does not replace the full range of IRS account services or professional tax guidance.

Viewing a balance, payment history, transcript, or notice can help users better understand what is happening in their account. It does not necessarily explain why an issue occurred or what to do next.

An unexpected balance, payment discrepancy, or IRS notice may require additional review. The app can help individuals obtain the information, while a tax advisor can help determine what it means and how to respond.

Use the Official App and Stay Alert for Scams

Because the app provides access to sensitive tax information, taxpayers should download or update it only through verified IRS resources or the official listings in the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Be cautious of look-alike apps and unsolicited emails, texts, or pop-ups asking you to sign in to an IRS account or provide personal information. The IRS generally does not initiate contact through unsolicited emails, text messages, or social media messages requesting personal or financial information.

Individuals should also protect their IP PIN and share it only with a trusted tax professional when it is needed to prepare and file a return.

Another Tool for Managing Your Tax Information

The new IRS app will not eliminate every step involved in preparing a return or resolving an IRS issue, but it may make commonly needed information easier to access.

Contact your CRI advisor if you have questions about an IRS notice, need assistance preparing your individual tax return, or want to discuss information appearing in your IRS account. With the right guidance, easier access to IRS information can help you respond more confidently and keep your tax matters on track.
